Experience that Delivers Excellence in Veterinary Care

After many years of working in practice at another company, Jelena Smiljanić, a veterinarian from Šabac, decided to open her own veterinary clinic, "Vet-park." "That work experience gave me valuable knowledge and hands-on expertise, but also insight into certain shortcomings, which motivated me to start working independently and introduce my own standards," Jelena says.

One of the key challenges was modernizing equipment and acquiring new devices—something Jelena successfully overcame with the help of European Union grant funding through the EU PRO Plus programme. "This support enabled us to introduce equipment that brought new diagnostic methods into our practice and improved the quality of our work," she explains. Through a 10,328 Euros grant, "Vet-park" purchased an ultrasound machine, an ECG device, and specialized equipment for treating small animals, significantly enhancing its diagnostic capabilities.

In addition to improving its services, "Vet-park" has also demonstrated social responsibility through cooperation with a local animal protection association, supporting the sterilization of stray dogs in Šabac. This initiative aims to reduce the number of abandoned dogs and contribute to a safer environment for the local community.

Jelena’s advice to future women and men entrepreneurs is clear: "Be persistent and decisive in your decisions, create a solid business plan, and consult people with experience. Courage is the key to success."

This initiative was part of a broader effort by the EU PRO Plus programme to strengthen local economic development through backing of micro and small enterprises local self-governments across Šumadija and Western Serbia, and Southern and Eastern Serbia. The Public Call for Proposals for Procurement of Equipment and Introduction of Services for Entrepreneurs, Micro, and Small Enterprises resulted in 113 projects (out of 610 applications received) with a total value of 3,564,397 Euros. The EU provided 2,731,787 Euros to support enterprises focused on production and services, including information technology, architectural and engineering activities, health and social care, tourism, and maintenance and repair services. The initiative included job creation proportional to grant size and corporate social responsibility benefiting local communities.
