Weaving Knowledge: Revitalising the Educational Ecosystem of the Pirotski District

In the Pirotski district, education is not only being improved—it is being reimagined, thread by thread. It is no coincidence that here, where tradition and modernity intertwine, a transformative initiative has been launched to build a brighter future for education.

As one of the 18 integrated projects funded through the EU PRO Plus programme, the project "Integrated: Improving the Educational Ecosystem in the Urban Area" connects the City of Pirot with the municipalities of Dimitrovgrad, Babušnica, and Bela Palanka, as well as with esteemed educational institutions and regional development partners. This ambitious endeavour addresses key challenges such as demographic decline and outdated infrastructure while simultaneously promoting inclusivity and innovation in education.

At the heart of the project lies the revitalisation of educational infrastructure. In Pirot, the historic Grammar School, an architectural treasure and cultural monument, is undergoing reconstruction to enhance its functionality and energy efficiency. In neighboring Babušnica, pupils of the "Despot Stefan Lazarević" Primary School got new summer classrooms. The area in front of the school has been arranged with behaton tiles, a tartan surface for the sports field, as well as new furniture, benches and fences. The children now have a decorated and safe space for learning and outdoor recreation. In Bela Palanka, a fence was installed at the "Ljupče Španac" Primary School, while the lighting and floors were replaced at the "Niketa Remezijanski" Secondary School. Two new vehicles were purchased for the "8th September" Preschool in Dimitrovgrad, one for transporting children with disabilities and the other for transporting food. Also, the youngest in this preschool received new furniture, playground equipment, computer equipment and materials for playing and learning.

This initiative goes beyond infrastructure alone. A modern digital platform will connect schools across the region, enabling collaboration among over 2,000 students and teachers and enriching the educational experience for nearly 3,000 community members. A focus on sustainability through energy-efficient practices ensures that schools will become not only better equipped but also environmentally responsible. Additionally, Pirot received 50,000 Euros to develop a feasibility study for establishing a higher education institution, which will provide young people with greater educational opportunities and better prospects for employment.

As these threads weave together, the project creates a rich educational tapestry—where tradition preserves the past, and innovation shapes the future. With a total investment of 1.29 million Euros, of which one million was provided by the European Union, this initiative demonstrates how collective efforts are key to regional development.

As part of its support to integrated territorial development, the European Union, through the EU PRO Plus programme, assisted development of 12 territorial strategies, while with the grant of 9.6 million Euros, supported implementation of 18 integrated projects. The projects focus on key areas such as education, economy, environment, energy transition, tourism, social inclusion, and waste management, significantly promoting collaboration between cities, smaller municipalities, the civil sector, and local communities. All projects are currently in the implementation, providing a foundation for sustainable growth and a better future for local communities in Serbia.
