Recognising the potential of Rgoška Spa, the Municipality of Knjaževac, with financial support from the European Union amounting to over 260,000 Euros, constructed a modern rehabilitation and wellness center adjacent to the thermo-mineral water source. The first phase of the project, which included construction works, water supply and sewage systems, and underfloor heating, was completed with support from the Ministry of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications. In the subsequent phase, thanks to EU grant funding, the entire facility was completed and equipped with modern hydro-massage tubs, saunas, steam baths, and rehabilitation equipment.
"Alongside the exceptional potential Knjaževac has for the development of mountain, rural, and sports tourism, with EU support we have now significantly improved spa tourism as well. The rehabilitation and wellness center in Rgoška Spa represents an important boost for the local economy, an increase in tourist arrivals, and the creation of new jobs for the people of Knjaževac," said Milan Đokić, Mayor of Knjaževac, which contributed approximately 29,000 Euros to the project.
Special attention was given to energy efficiency and environmental standards. The wellness center is equipped with a modern heating and air-conditioning system, while the air-handling unit ensures optimal air quality, humidity, and temperature. Heat pumps installed for heating and cooling further reduce energy consumption and contribute to the long-term sustainable management of the facility.
The area designated for physical therapy is equipped with massage tables, changing cabins, and supporting equipment. In addition, the center provides physical medicine and rehabilitation services under the professional supervision of doctors and physiotherapists.
For the local community, this project represents more than just an infrastructure investment. It creates opportunities for the development of sustainable and resilient tourism, extends the tourist season, and strengthens the connection between natural resources and modern tourism trends. The example of Knjaževac and Rgoška Spa shows how, with strategic support and clear planning, local potential can be transformed into long-term development opportunities both for tourism and for the quality of life of the local population.
This project is part of the European Union broader support for improving economic infrastructure in the regions of Šumadija and Western Serbia, as well as Southern and Eastern Serbia, through the EU PRO Plus programme. Through this programme, the EU has invested more than five million Euros in 20 projects aimed at improving local competitiveness by enhancing business conditions and attracting new investments. These initiatives included the construction and reconstruction of industrial zones and tourist locations, as well as the development of technical documentation to support further business infrastructure development.
